Re-programming or programming your 1998-2003 Toyota Sienna door remote is something you can do yourself–it is just a tedious thing to do.  First park your van somewhere where you can safely open and close your driver’s side door (the street may not be the best place).

Hardware:

You have 40 seconds to complete these steps.  Steps 1-9 place the van in programming mode and then (repeating) steps 10-11 allow you to program a single or multiple remotes.

Placing the Vehicle into Remote Programming Mode:

  1. Driver’s door open, all other doors closed, key removed from ignition.
  2. Insert and remove key from ignition
  3. Press lock and unlock on door lock switch at 1 second intervals 5 times:
    a. Lock, unlock
    b. Lock, unlock
    c. Lock, unlock
    d. Lock, unlock
    e. Lock, unlock
  4. Close and open driver’s side door
  5. Press lock and unlock on door lock switch at 1 second intervals 5 times:
    a. Lock, unlock
    b. Lock, unlock
    c. Lock, unlock
    d. Lock, unlock
    e. Lock, unlock
  6. Insert key into ignition
  7. Switch the ignition on and off (turn key only until dash lights come on, but do not start the engine):
    a. twice to program a remote transmitter code (while erasing the original codes)
    b. three times to check how many remote transmitters are currently registered.
  8. Remove key from ignition
  9. System should now lock and unlock the vehicle twice (on its own)

Programming Remotes (after successfully completing the steps above):

  1. Press and hold lock and unlock buttons
  2. Press lock button for 1 second
  3. System should now lock and unlock vehicle:
    a. once to confirm
    b. twice to indicate failure
  4. Repeat steps 10 and 11 to program another transmitter (a maximum of 4 remotes allowed)
  5. To exit programming mode close driver’s door or insert ignition key
  6. To end the programming mode shut the door or insert the key into the ignition
